North Korea Criticizes South Korea’s “Deceptive Appeasement”

(MENAFN) North Korea has issued strong remarks against South Korea’s recent diplomatic efforts, labeling them a “deceptive appeasement offensive,” according to a report published by a news agency on Wednesday.

The criticism highlights ongoing tensions on the Korean Peninsula, especially in light of military cooperation between Seoul and Washington.

During a high-level session with senior Foreign Ministry officials, Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, dismissed South Korean President Lee Jae Myung’s overtures to improve inter-Korean ties.

She argued that such efforts are futile, declaring the prospect of reconciliation "impossible," as cited by the news agency.

Kim Yo Jong accused South Korea of insincerity, claiming that under the guise of peace, Seoul and Washington are conducting joint drills designed to “eliminate” North Korea’s strategic military capabilities early and potentially launch offensive operations against the North.

“We must pay attention to the fact that, while pretending to extend a hand of reconciliation, the joint military exercises that have been held again are under review to ‘eliminate’ our nuclear and missile capabilities at an early stage and expand attacks into the territory of the Republic,” she said.

Her statement was in reference to the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise — an 11-day military operation that began on Monday and involves both South Korean and U.S. forces.

This major military activity is taking place concurrently with a four-day civil defense drill involving around 580,000 South Korean civilians, running through Thursday.

As part of these preparations, a nationwide anti-air raid drill was also scheduled for Wednesday, forming a key component of the country’s broader civil defense strategy.

Kim Yo Jong went further to claim that South Korea is unfit to participate in any diplomatic process affecting regional stability.

She asserted that Seoul “cannot be a diplomatic partner” and would not be permitted any influence in shaping the geopolitical future of Northeast Asia.

Adding to the criticism, Kim Jong Un himself denounced the joint military exercises a day prior.

The North Korean leader described the drills as a clear demonstration of the allied forces' intention to “ignite a war,” emphasizing the regime’s long-standing view that such activities are provocations rather than defensive maneuvers.
